Free Weights

Free weights have been common gym gear for decades. In fact, when most people think of gym equipment, free weights are what they think about. These items are among the most basic pieces of exercise equipment but their effectiveness is unrivaled.

Most experts will tell you that free weights are preferred to weight machines when it comes to building muscle mass. Unlike machines, they require the use of a variety of muscles, providing a much more thorough workout. Machines are good for isolating a particular muscle, but free weights force you to use them all.

When using free weights it is important to make sure you have a spotter to assist you. Unlike weight machines, there are no safety mechanisms to keep the weights from causing injury. A spotter can help eliminate the risk of hurting oneself while doing intense lifting.
